HELLO HELLO ALL I'm Crystal and I'm bringing in John Steinbeck from Bungou Stray Dogs. Yes, that's his name. Yes, he's based off the actual John Steinbeck, literary figure extraordinaire, because all the main characters from his canon are named and inspired by famous literary authors. All said characters also have powers relating to the works of their namesakes. It's basically Anime Authors Fight Club (Superpowered Edition).
John Steinbeck here is actually kind of a vaguely evil rip-off of Tom Joad from The Grapes of Wrath, and spends his time cheerfully hanging out with morally grey people (including Cthulhu), talking about how much he loves his family, eating raw potatoes, and also wishing he could kill capitalism 24/7. In canon, he was basically a mercenary with the ability to, uh, grow grape seeds out of his own body and control plants with them. Trust me, it's as gross as it sounds.
In the game though, he's a Scarback monk who harbors revolutionary desires to tear down the Company which has made his family back in Westerley suffer as much as they have. On the surface, he's a very cheerful and easygoing guy who likes spreading the word of his faith, but in reality he's a pretty ruthless and cruel man who won't hesitate to hurt or kill others to get what he wants. He also has this weird obsession of becoming one with the Mother Tree of his faith, and therefore thinks growing plants out of his body is a great use of his time.

i've never actually read john steinbeck. /admits this shamefully
SO these two have a similar thing going on about smile and cheer but also capacity to be cold af inside. except lavi is probably a little less cold. but without his canon memories he's more or less just a thin veneer of killjoy on top of a lot of "bookman". you can read about his translation over here in the first part of the history if you don't wanna muck around too much but!! tl;dr: esoteric clan of impartial history keepers tasked with observing the hidden sides of the galaxy. Lavi is assigned to this area as part of his pilgrimage and has a strong working relationship with the Scarbacks as a bookman rather than as a killjoy.
in other words they've probably met and been :D at each other in the past but John would mostly know him as a scholar who hits on all the aunts and has a lot of scars for a guy into writing history books or ?? idk
alternatively they might have seen through each other from the start and kill bill sirens went off

that is pretty cool! secret bounty hunter bookkeeper boy...i honestly think that steinbeck would have a positive view of him, and they've probably become good acquaintances over the years! honestly, like, as long as you aren't a capitalist, he doesn't care who or where you're from, so even though they're both smiley cold guys they'll probably get along well
(though steinbeck probably tells him off for flirting with the aunts really often like control your thirst, Lavi)

Laure here, with this surly jerk. Sadly to say he thinks Scarback and their religion are untrustworthy, but +10000 for their monastery? Long talks about the religion are likely to get John punched in the face though....
He's a difficult idiot.
On the plus side, they both hate the Company so there is that! IDEK where to start for CR, but I do want! Thoughts?

Steinbeck isn't as talkative about his religion as others (though he's a chatty person in general, he doesn't really push his beliefs on others if he feels they're not open to it)! so no punching would happen here, don't worry. but anyways, Steinbeck is very secretive about his movements in the revolution, but would share vague anti-Company sentiments in public - if he wants to catch on that and open discussions there, they can totally do so. does Kanda ever want to be part of the revolution, or is he just a Company hater, because if its the first one, Steinbeck can have an in for him if he deems him trustworthy enough!

I will have one, one day. They're my favorite faction...He's got a very obvious distrust of anything related to the Nine, but he's pretty firmly RAC neutral. That's not to say with development he wouldn't help someone of the resistance, but it'll take a bit. To start, them both knowing Lavi will probably be a good way to get them in the same place.
He's more tolerant of people that Lavi wastes time on.

here she's a bar singer/info broker who frequents both leith and westerly, so maybe she's met john at some point? she would think the scarbacks are pretty interesting, and so wouldn't really hesitate to approach him out of curiosity. or offer any info if he needs it

She probably has met John at some point, and he is the type to chat people up - I can definitely see him approaching her after her performances in the bar just to talk about things. He'll take all the info he can get, and just be happy to chat, he's a pretty friendly guy...other things considering.
